Evolving Eichler: A Family Home Transformed for New Beginnings
Project type
Design Concept
Date
2009-2012
Location
The Art Institute
This project was developed during my time at The Art Institute of California - Sunnyvale and centers around a classic Eichler Home in Palo Alto.
Designed for a growing family of three welcoming a new baby, the goal was to thoughtfully evolve the home’s mid-century foundation to support a new way of living. The redesign focused on creating flexible, connected spaces that honor the Eichler’s iconic indoor-outdoor flow while introducing warmth, functionality, and comfort for young family life.
With the arrival of their child, the family sought a shift — from open, adult-centered entertaining spaces to a layout that felt safe, nurturing, and adaptable. The design balances clean architectural lines with soft textures, layered materials, and intentional storage solutions, ensuring the home grows seamlessly alongside their family.
